During spring 2008, I participated in the Washington Center for Politics & Journalism's semester program - which arranged for my placement as an intern in Newsday's Washington, D.C. bureau. The bureau had only an editor and two reporters when I arrived, so the editor assigned me to cover Capitol Hill during my internship at the newspaper.
Between February and May, I was responsible for covering New York's two U.S. senators and Long Island's five members of Congress. I assisted with other political and government news as necessary. Those four months in Washington solidified my desire to become a political journalist.
Here are samples of my work during my time at Newsday:
"Veterans: GI Bill falls short" (May 9, 2008)
"Dictator Departs: Special meaning for those touched, hurt by Castro" (Feb. 20, 2008)
"Mr. Paterson goes to Washington" (May 2, 2008)
"Past Due: Camp's health bills" (April 1, 2008)
"Global economy hits home" (May 2, 2008)
"Net-working through sites to win races" (April 20, 2008)
"Homeland Security 5 years old" (March 7, 2008)
During my time at Newsday, I also contributed regular content to Newsday's politics blog, Spin Cycle. Here are samples of my reports:
"Clinton and Obama: Just senators for a day" (March 13, 2008)
"Return of the presidential truants" (March 14, 2008)
"Rangel criticized on 'pork'" (April 2, 2008)
