I spent six semesters on The State News staff at Michigan State University. I began as an intern the first semester of my freshman year and, within three weeks, was promoted to a full-time news reporter. Afterward, I spent two semesters as a top reporter - covering MSU academics and the city of East Lansing - and two semesters as a copy editor. My final semester, I served as the editor in chief. In that role, I led the staff in advancing our online multimedia content to distinguish StateNews.com from the print publication.
Here are samples of my work during my time at The State News:
"Disasters affect more than local residents" (March 30, 2009)
"Beyond the divide" (March 2, 2007)
"Tailor made" (April 26, 2006)
"East Village plans downsized" (April 27, 2007)
"Feedback from axed plan used for University Village project" (Nov. 23, 2005)
"Fraternity property declared unlivable" (Jan. 8, 2007)
"Night Owl driver observes motley group of students during 16-hour evening shift" (Nov. 22, 2006)
"Uniting communities" (March 23, 2007)
"Council delays release of agendas" (March 20, 2007)
"Prof denies affiliation with false cloning data" (Jan. 11, 2006)
When I was editor in chief in spring 2009, The State News celebrated its 100th anniversary. As part of our coverage - and my personal desire to expand my own multimedia skills - I created a behind-the-scenes video of The State News. It was used for several semesters afterward as a recruitment tool for hiring at the newspaper.
